James 1:13-27 True Religion is Right Application

James 1:13-27 True Religion is Right Application

good morning we're still in the book of Acts we will continue our I James will continue our study in the book of James so we are done with the verses 1 in the chapter 1 to 12 and hour 13 to 27 and we're gonna finish this chapter 1 so before I start our sermon for today any of you always have this experience but I know while a movie deals in ballet and then you initially you run to your mom mom where's my pair of socks or it's my favorite socks or is my notebook where is my favorite bulb and favorite pencil case so we go to our mom right we our mom will always yell at us how I always forget things they always misplace things and then you call me because of your forgetfulness so we always experienced that and every day our mom is like radio you know in our house reminding us of the things reminding us always of the things that we need to keep in mind and things that you should put in place so that everything when we go to our place our workplace or our school everything is in order we forget nothing so today we'll have an inventory in James 13 to 27 um James is teaching us to look into our hearts to have this inventory inside our hearts and later on we're gonna study that what kind of inventory is James talking into him so let's start with verse 13 let no one say when he is tempted I am being tempted by God for God cannot be tempted with evil and he himself attempts no one but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire then desire – conceived gets birth to sin and sin when it's fully grown brings earth-death verse 16 do not be deceived my beloved brothers every good gift and every perfect gift is from above coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow or death temptation is common experience for every money whether you're a Christian or non-christian temptation is real how we deal with it reveal the genuineness of our faith or lack of it let's go back to the basic first I'll read to you Genesis 3 this is the fall of Adam and Eve Genesis 3 9 to 11 already to you but the Lord God called the man this is a dumb and said to him where are you and he said I heard the sound of you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked and I hid myself he said he said who told you that you were naked have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat and then this is the response the man said the woman whom you gave to me whom you gave to be with me she gave me fruit of the tree and I ate so look at the response of Adam first is he blame not the woman and he blame God this is this is really shocking for the the part of Edom now you just sleep in a while then you just woke up with a woman and then there's a woman beside you and then all of a sudden you're married instantly with this woman and then this woman ate that fruit the food forbidden fruit and then look at the response of Edom he don't blame the woman but he blame God and he said the woman whom you gave to be with me he blamed God she gave me the fruit of the tree and I ate initially he blamed God not he blame Eve so this is the initial respond of a person when what someone is caught with a sin he will blame primarily God and then he will blame the circumstances he will bring his family his friends or economic status in life we run to everything did we look for something to blame on but here in verse 13 let no one say that he is tempted I am being tempted by God for God cannot be tempted with evil and he himself tamps no one in the previous verses we study about trials that God allowed trials to come into our life the purpose of that is what to bring us into maturity the dual can be perfect you can be spiritually mature it's there to test our faith it's there to strengthen us it's there to know the God that we are worshiping and here temptation is not from God and it's very clear that James is reminding us the nature of evil and the nature of man and that's what you're gonna study today first we're gonna go first with who that is the nature of God in Leviticus 1912 I read it to you the Lord spoke to Moses saying speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them you shall be holy for I am the Lord your God holy and in Leviticus 20 26 and ready to you you shall be holy to me for I the LORD am holy and have separated you from the peoples that you should be mine and there's a wonderful description in aasaiya 633 a 6-3 holy holy holy three times is the Lord of hosts the whole earth is full of his glory so here it's very important when we go to this facts that we have a biblical understanding of who God is and first that he is holy therefore he is not responsible for temptation because primarily temptation will lead to sin trials lead to knowing him trials will lead to strengthen our faith that's difference between a trial and a temptation so here James is bringing this people to this biblical understanding of the of the trial that we're going through and the temptation that comes with it because every trial there's also a big temptation so let's move forward in verse 14 but each person is tempted when he's lured and enticed by his own desire so first we understand that God is not responsible for the temptation that produces sin because that is holy and James emphasizes here this being tempted the the Greek for this is a PO and you PO he really emphasized that the remoteness the distance and in direct relationship the distance is not big not from God and the Opel their agency it's the one who actually doing it he emphasized that it's not from God not that God is there directly tempting me but but that remotely he is the real cause of this problem so this is what James is emphasizing another wonderful situation for this is the poor man the poor man who steals the poor man who do crime it's easy for the poor man to blame his circumstances to justify his wrongdoing I do this because I'm poor therefore it's just it's just just to do this crime because of my situation and that's the nature of man we will look for something to blame and notice here the evil is a neuter which means evil of all kind so in in Habakkuk 1 3 I would like to emphasize farther you are of purer eyes than to see evil so it's holiness is eternally and makes his holiness is pure and that cannot look at the Queen in any Queenie in equity sorry we're tongue-twisters up oh I know so it's kinda cannot be mix his pure Ness is really pure 100% pure if there's adulteration that's that's not already pure but here it's emphasized that God is pure so let's go on with the nature of man so James doe deeper but each person is tempted when he is lured notice this world and notice this enticed by his own one desire Lord here is a hunting term it's used to alert an animal into a trap a trap is baited and the animal is baited into that trap and therefore it it captures that animal and next is enticed uses this first is lured and enticed entice is a fishing term to catch a fish with a bait so there's a big debate and there's we call this pond some who use this worm or some use this artificial fish that looks like real fish and then they were being deceived now oh this is good but later on there's a hook inside and then boom you're being catched so here James go further that each person is tempted he is lowered and enticed and noticed this where is the source by his own desire from the inside already Romans 7 15 to 25 that's rumen 715 235 I do not understand my own actions for I do not do what I want but I do the very thing I hate now if I do what I do not one I agree with the law that is good so now it is no longer I who do it and but sin that dwells within me for I know that nothing good dwells in me that is in my flesh for have the desire to do what is right but not the ability to carry it out for I do not do the good I want but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing now if I do what I do not want it is no longer I who do it but the sin that dwells in me so I find it to be a law that when I want to do right evil eyes close at hand for I delight in the law of God in my inner being but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members verse 24 said man that I am who will deliver me from this body of death thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord so then I myself serve the law of God with my mind but with my flesh I serve the law of sin so the problem is our flesh James is emphasizing that the problem is not on the end outside the problem is the inside our sinfulness our fallenness the sin that dwells within us so here is now this temptation we are lured into it and luring into it and enticed into it is using and inviting in a foul we found it more appetizing we found it more good we found it more inviting than the real the real God that we are worshipping then in verse 15 desire when eNOS conceived gives birth to sin and sin when it's fully grown brings forth death now James is now bringing us into this illustration of a woman conceiving and then a woman gives birth so the consider is literally to become pregnant and here James gave us a wonderful picture of from emotion our feelings to death so first is it started with the Unown desire we see that that bait with inviting inviting bait and then we look at it and then there's a feeling and there's a desire develop inside and then we want it and you want to get it and then we entertain that desire and then we are now being deceived that that is more beautiful that is more good then we go to that bait and later on we found ourselves fully grown and brings forth death it gives birth to a child and that child is a killer because it brings forth death and here James father go do not be deceived my beloved brothers because what every good gift that is dosis and every perfect gift that is a dreamer he's from above coming down from the Father of lights whom there is no variation so now there's a contrast James is presenting to us this is the nature of sin this is the nature of temptation it appeals to be good it appeals to be enticing it appeals to be in at the moment this will satisfy me but once we lured into it we go into it then there's it conceived of guilt it conceived of death and then it brings forth totally death and now here James emphasizes that the goodness of God every good gift the act of giving the dis doses and every perfect gift the gift given is from above and notice here the good we studied before that God is purely holy hundred percent holy and we have now here the picture that God is good I can imagine in my own human understanding of God's goodness how good he is and James emphasizes here that every there's inclusive every good gift every perfect gift is from God coming down from the Father of lights this is a Jewish ancient Jewish way of referring that God is the Creator the lights the Sun the Moon the stars and now James go further with whom there is no variation or shadow shadow Joe Jew to change everything is 100% full full blast when God poured out his goodness to us it's full blast there's no thirty percent twenty percent or 50 percent everything is full so if God is pouring out all these good things pure why are we still enticed with this appearing to be good but it will not fulfill us in the end why we still go and be lured by this trap looking at it believing it that it will satisfy us at once where their death comes in and it's very important for us brothers and sisters for today where do we address when temptation comes in do I address this in at the moment of feeling desire and emotion or in the address that very witness it already conceived it's about to give birth and when it give birth it birth to destruction gives birth to death and it's too late and we know this and we experience this we think that okay this is temptation I'm Lord because I think that this is good we go into it and then we want some more okay some more and then we want another another taste of it and later on we found ourselves destroyed later on we found ourselves broken and it's very apparent even in in a church but when sin is not addressed at that point of desire at that point of emotion there will be chaos inside there will be division because it's not addressed early when temptation comes in so how we are dressing that temptation do we found God more beautiful God that God is good or we found this bait more good than God and this is the nature of sin it appears to be satisfying there's a lie that it ends it will bring us good there's a lie that it will bring us to full satisfaction at that moment but later on it will destroy us it will kill us bleeding more blood and that's scary because the nature of the sin is described here death and that's a killer the point of sin is not just to wound you but to kill you that's why it's described here death directly and that's heavy the birth of a child that's a killer sin is a killer and the wages of sin is what death there's spiritual death the separation of soul from God physical death separation of soul from the body sometimes sin leads us to the death and eternal death our soul and our body from God now let's move forward in verse 18 of his own will notice the word here we'll this is not that is wishing us of my own wish but of my own will he brought us forth by the word of truth that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures now here James reminding us of our identity in Christ if you confess if you identify yourself as a Christian yes we sin but if our reaction to it is I want more then your faith is questionable but if your reaction is here I don't like it then we can saw it saw there that your heart is already changed so here James is reminding us that what brought us from that bondage of sin is through the Word of God and he's reminded us that we should be a kind how to live this is already our nature this is already who we are the first fruit in all Testament this is already apparent in Exodus 23:19 and in the victus 23 when you plant a crop then God said I want your first fruit I want the first in order I want the best to the first lady is his own beloved possession and that's his children and once we're in Christ I would like to remind you of this verse officiants to 1 already to you and you were dead in the trespasses and sin efficients for 24 to put on the new self created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness and in Titus 3:5 God saved us not because of our works done by us in righteousness but according to his own mercy by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit so this is who you are it's the Word of God that touches our heart the changes in heart from heart of stone to heart of flesh and then James's reminder reminding us our kind who we are that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his great creatures when God said I am holy then there is a demand for us to be holy as a Christian it is very important this is very important mark of a regenerated heart that you have loved for holiness you cannot just say God is stamping me you cannot go blaming your circumstances that God used this for me to be enticed but that kind of sin because the traitor is not from the outside the traitor lives in the inside and that's our flesh and here James reminding us of the word of God and reminding us of our identity in Christ you remember Nicodemus in John 3 it could be the most approached Christ Jesus and then he asked that I believe you are a true teacher and then Jesus Christ said unless you might be born again and see the kingdom of God and Nicodemus understand the flow of that conversation but is in denial mode and then young Tobias spin up in Panola so PO so you mean that I will go back to my mother's room for me to be born again and he knows really the message that God is implying when it's hard because of his religiosity because of who he is as a Pharisee he cannot drop everything and undo and start and put his identity in Christ because he puts so much identity in him for all these years and this is also a reminder for us a sufficient of the day when we are in Christ our identity is in Christ is not anymore of this world so we if we go to the system of the world and we also go to the system of this Christianity with the previous verses James dropped the heavy word he said that you are hypocrite you're loving the word you're loving God what some enjoyed you cannot mix that altogether if you love that you love that if you love the world you're not part of this Christianity so here when we address sin James is reminding us who we are in Christ how will we address the sin if the problem is within us so here James is reminding us that is the work of Christ Christ already redeemed us from that same Christ already rescued us from this bondage of sin and put us into the realm of righteousness and just like that God is holy hundred percent fool is goodness 100 percent full our transformation is not also where there's a variation our transformation is full that's why it's really hard to see Christians claiming to be Christians and their life is very contradicting to what they are claiming of and here James is reminding us that all this goodness of God that has been given unto us there always be a temptation that comes with it example the food we eat the food is good right but the temptation there is the big gluttonous to it all we want the money is good the temptation there is acquiring all these things and we are commanded to give generously not to keep generously all these things were good and there's a temptation real temptation and and the number one factor of it is us our fallenness and here Jane is reminding that of our identity in Christ let's move forward in 19 notice my beloved brothers he goes deeper let every person be quick to hear slow to speak slow to anger for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God so what is James talking here you will know what this talking in verse 21 therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and received with meekness the implanted word which is able to save our soul so when we hear the word of God the truth the truth will always hit us to the core and here James yongi mahi my first quick to hear listen to the Word of God next slow to speak be teachable and then he moved farther slow to anger there's an inside or a deep resentment now the Word of God is there telling us to give to the poor and then deep inside we know the truth that it is not for us to keep it is not for us to enjoy but it's also to freely give to others and we are still in denial mode Lord is this really you saying this is this really your commanding commanding us to drop everything and follow you and this is also same true with our daily life how we deal with one another how we deal with the Word of God our relationship between our parents our loved ones the Word of God is there to correct us to bring us into completion to bring us into maturity but sometimes were slow to anger deep inside were really recent we don't we don't we don't want we don't want that it's it's just too heavy for me the command is just to have it for me and sometimes we're just quick to hear we just pass it to the other end of our ears yeah I know that I know that this is familiar yes I know that parable already I know what God is implying to my life or slow to speak our heart is not teachable the Word of God is teaching us to live a life that is holy in conformance to his word I don't want it there's the pressure of the world is just too much for me then the Word of God so it's really a test of who we are inside how you respond to this thing for the anger of man does not produce righteousness of God of course how can it produce righteousness if you have deep resentment you're not obeying you're not living in obedience to the Word of God therefore put away all filthiness the put away here is a picture of you took off your dress you put all that dirty clothes that rampant wickedness and receive with meekness I'll read to you officiants for 22 to put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds in verse 24 and took on the new self created after the likeness of God in the true righteousness and holiness so now James move further he discusses receive a weakness or humbly or with the humility receiving the Word of God needs humility it needs a humble heart because in the previous verse the quick to hear slow to speak slow to anger is an issue of meekness the Word of God is there given to us really in our country the Word of God our Bible is we cannot be physically persecute be persecuted of bringing our Bibles reading it in a coffee shop or everywhere even our office and the Word of God is very clear very pure in commanding us how to live a holy life there's always a line between Christianity and people claiming to be Christians which part of the world and it it needs meekness in obeying the Word of God and notice here the word implanted word which is able to save your I would like to read through jeremiah 31:33 for is the covenant that i will make with the house of israel after those days declared the lord i will put my law within them and I will write it on their hearts and I will be their God and they shall be what my people and in Ezekiel 36 26 to 27 I'll read it to you and I will give you a a new heart and what a new spirit I will put within you and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh and I will put my spirit within you the pill what caused you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules now we have here now the idea a test of a person claiming to be a Christian if you're a Christian the word is already planted in your heart the Spirit is dwelling inside you when you hear the word the word will cause you to obey through the power of the Holy Spirit it will strengthen you to obey the Word of God it will strengthen you to follow his will it will strengthen you to embrace as well his holiness and once we're quick to hear slow to speak slow to anger we need inventory in this matter are we really in Christ or are we just using Christ for us to be called Christians because a Christian there's already an indwelling world word and indwelling Spirit that lives in him and it's from God and that is holy a Christian will embrace holiness so let's move forward verse 22 he goes deeper but be doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving yourself for if anyone is a hearer of the word and not doer he is like a man who looks intently at this natural face in a mirror if he looks at himself and goes away at once forget what he was like but the one who looks into the perfect law and the law of Liberty and perseveres being no hero forgets but a doer who acts he will be blessed in his doing so James goes deeper all the more first he said in verse 22 be doers of the word not hearers because you're just deceiving yourself you're just being hypocrite your your truth and love is not balanced and he goes to an illustration of what it is in verse 22 for if anyone is a hearer of the word and up doer is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in the mirror for he looks at himself and goes away and at once forget what he was like the first look here in the Greek is cattle k'tano AO it means to observe and to purse to perceive and the next look here in verse 25 it is pericope toe to stoop to a thing in order to look at it to bend down to examine something with care and precision first is there is a man who just look himself up the mirror okay this is the Word of God is the truth okay that's it I'm okay to go it's like a person who goes into a Sunday service just like a Sunday service Christian we call that it goes to a church every Sunday hears the word and then by Monday he forgets everything he read his Bible and then in after an hour nothing he is just like a man we just hear the word but no desire to do it and now there's another man he looks himself and goes away and forget what he was like that the first manned and there's the next month but the one who looks into the perfect law the law of Liberty and persevere being no here forgets wonderful mark he don't forget but a doer who acts there's a respond to that word he will be blessed in his doing the first man is just looking to the mirror okay this is the word of God I'm good to go and that's it the next band is he hears the word of God and he look into his heart he look into his life he let the word speak like the word corrects his lifestyle he let the word penetrate his hole he is the hero who never forget he remembers the word of the law for the word of God or the law and also he's a doer who acts and this is a wonderful mark of our Christian a Christian who here and a Christian who acts based on what he hears and he will be blessed in his doing I would like to read through Joshua 1:8 but this book of the law shall not depart from your mouth but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it for then you will make your way prosperous and then we will have a good success as Christians we know we're very aware that apart from the will of God apart from the Word of God there is chaos that will happen there's security within the Word of God there is goodness within the Word of God and you go outside of it it will kill you there's a killer and the killer reminding you again that's it's inside us our fallen nature and he goes further in 26 if anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceiveth heart this person religion is worthless out of the abundance of your heart the mouth speaks from the outside you're confirming to the system you go to this religious activity but what comes out in your mouth is totally opposite thing and James said but deceive is hard this person religion is worthless there's no point of going further you're just conforming to a system you're just doing the checklist one by one and there's no real transformation from the inside to the outside and here's a contrast in verse 27 religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world love the Father 12 brings gives birth to love for others love for holiness love for the word love for the church family for it falls down to our love to God so this is a reminder of James that first the temptation is not from God God in his nature is wholly evil is not his nature it's a total opposite of its nature therefore he is the evil is not from him he is responsible for allowing trials in our life but not temptation and temptation for a man the greatest war is from the inside we have this fallen nature when we are given this opportunity which is good we grab into it we thought that it brings good pleasure but it leads to destruction and it's also a reminder for us our view of God do you do if you got big do you view God wholly ultimately is the one who will only satisfy the longings of our heart oh you go run to other things getting something thinking that those things will feel this gap that we've been looking for inside our hearts and along that line James is reminding us of our identity in Christ if you are really in Christ the word is already planted in your heart God already shows you before the foundation of the earth your eternally secure that's why your love and desire change you have no the love for the word love for the church love for the others love to reach the lost love for holiness because that's the mark of a Christian and this is James is reminding us of that mark of a Christian so you look at person's life do they love the world or they did they leave for the world do they indulge in the world pure religion belongs to people who show an inner control manifest in theirs and their speech we show a love for people in need I know stay away from being stained by the culture buying into the worldly and biblical philosophy and that's how a Christian lives and this is also a reminder when you say certain things we Christians were not even mindful of our mouths sometimes we say things that is not not gives glory to God and the demand here is not perfection is heavy because James is really pointing everything what's wrong in our hearts but if I reaction is I hate that in me I hate that that I said it and that's one that's a good reaction but if I reaction is I want more of it then you need to check your heart if you're really in Christ you look at yourself how do I know I'm a Christian in this context I'm going to do self inventory and the way I can check myself is by checking off my tongue the religion is a matter of holy obedience so I will I'll read to you the first Jan 4 7 and 8 this is a famous Sunday school song before beloved let us love one another for love is from God and whoever love has been born of God and knows God anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love so this is the emphasis on verse 27 our love for others and it's primarily the source of it is our love for God so this is the word for today in James 1:13 227 my prayer is that we commit our hearts and we check we have this inventory our love in our desire and also how we deal with temptation do we address it at the point of emotion or do we address it very late now that's already conceiving it's about to give birth and once it gives birth watch out that child is a killer the goal of that same to kill you and it leads to death so as a Christian we are called to live holy and this is a reminder and our identity primarily is in Christ God chose us God already implanted that word inside our heart that spirit is poured into us and it's very important that how we live as Christian will manifest in our life and let us pray
