17 Replies to “Exercise vs. Drugs for Depression

  1. I'm very thankful I have never suffered from depression (is there such a thing as being too optimistic? — that's me!)  However, when my husband was going through some health challenges, I found great comfort in going to the gym and working out.  It helped me get my mind off our situation.  So I can see how exercise would benefit people with depression.  And just think, instead of drug side effects, you get a more toned body!  Awesome!

  2. Oh hello! Have you heard about Depzap Total Depression Domination (do a google search)? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my mate used it to end depression after years of struggling.

  3. I'm addicted to Alprazolam (Xanax). I was hospitalized twice. But the addiction is still there. I work out 2 hours a day but still am extremely dependent on the pills. Would you please say the chemical name for Zoloft? As I don't live in the USA and no one knows what Zoloft is. I need the chemical name for it.

  4. I have had episodes of depression my whole life. Anecdotally, I can say that for me exercise has both a prophylactic effect and can dramatically help with an episode. The problem is, that is is hard to do it when I am having an episode. It takes mental toughness and discipline. I have found that exercise that puts me up close to going anaerobic works the best, that is pretty intense exercise. For me, that usually means fast bicycling. Walking helps but the effects are not as good. I wish there were some studies that looked at the intensity level of the exercise and its impact on depression. One nice side benefit for me is that depression has caused me to stay in excellent shape the last 10 years.

  5. This is a great video! BUT, I would have loved if you mentioned how much exercise was prescribed during these studies.
    But thank you!

  6. I immigrate 20 years ago iam from mediterannean are. iwas shocked how Dr prescribed easily antidépressant. i lost my job i was stressed à bit. the Dr prescribed me antidépressant. I never took I pray Allah and meditate redingote coran in sunrise. I ate 5 vege (salade with olive oil) and fruits/day. I didnt give up on meat.I love meat😍. and I am walking at least 1h Per day and very important 2 cups of KEFIR every day beside 2l of water. And I catch up with in 2 months.

  7. Brilliant video. From personal experience weight lifting doesn't make me feel much better and can even cause bouts of anger but cardiovascular work elevates my mood significantly.

  8. I got depressed because i couldnt exercise as i used to and things just got worse from there. When your feet and knees hurt with every step (imagine running!) its hard not to get discouraged at least especially when you have been an award winning athlete for much of your life and being active and your body performing optimally is a part of your identity…

  9. Now I also have to exercise to NOT die in addition to eating properly? Damn, life is turning out to be quite the nuisance.

  10. 2:49 “So, we can say with confidence that exercise is comparable to antidepressant medication in the treatment of patients with major depressive disorder. Putting all the best studies together the evidence indicates exercise, at least, has a moderate anti-depressant affect, and at best, exercise has a large affect on reductions in depressive symptoms, and could be characterized as a very useful and powerful intervention. Unfortunately, while studies support the use of exercise as a treatment for depression, exercise is rarely prescribed as a treatment for this common and debilitating problem.”
